Current Programs at the Condestable Mine

Health Campaigns

In conjunction with the Peruvian Government’s Solidarity Program, Iberian’s Condestable team has undertaken the following initiatives: 

• Implementing a daily distribution program of nutritional lunch boxes for children under the age of 5, with a special focus on those showing chronic malnutrition. 
• Construction and improvement of Pronoei (Non-school programs of early education) and pre-school education institutes, with a focus on restrooms, classrooms, perimeter fences and kitchens. 

Farming 

Iberian maintains excellent relations with the farming community of Mala.  Personnel from the community are engaged in a Pilot Orchard Program, with tara and grape plantations being established on abandoned lands.  First crops from this program will be obtained by 2009.

Job Creation

Iberian was instrumental in the construction of the Mala Textile Workshop which trains local people in manufacturing.  The workshop produces uniforms which are sold in local markets.  Iberian also supports programs including training for young people in hospitality, leading to jobs at local resorts and training for women in administration and household management.

Other Initiatives

In an effort to provide aid to the victims of damages caused by an earthquake in August 2007, Iberian has supported local schools in the farming community of Mala. At school 21015 the Company rents sports fields for sporting and physical activity.  Iberian has also donated computers and helped to implement a computer classroom for school 20237.  Support for students studying in environmental conservation is also provided by the Company.

Safety

Condestable was recently recognized as the safest underground mine in Peru for 2008. Iberian is also very proud to have ISO 14001and OHSAS 18001 certifications.

Aguas Tenidas

Environment

Iberian is committed to conducting business responsibly and in a manner designed to protect employees, the community's health, and the environment. The Company has developed an Environmental Policy and Standards for all sites to follow to ensure minimal impact of its operations on the surrounding environment. The project has all the required environmental permits issued by the local, regional and federal governments. 

The design, development and operation of the Aguas Tenidas facilities is managed with a view to reducing the impact of the operations; ensuring efficient use of energy, water and other resources; minimizing waste generation and disposal; and where waste must be disposed of, doing so responsibly. A high standard of environmental protection is maintained through site-specific Environmental Management Systems (EMS).

Iberian is dedicated to producing long term value for all our stakeholders, including our people, our investors and the communities in which we operate.  While the company completes the ramp-up phase of development at Aguas Tenidas, we are developing our corporate responsibility initiatives which will be implemented in due course.
